Beddo women back in action as club ready to go racing!

‘We’re not here to watch.’

That’s the emphatic headline of new posters promoting Beddington CC’s women’s team.

It’s a great slogan, and the work of our own Natalie Beales, mum of rising star Sam, who is global marketing director for Spartan Race and Tough Mudder, the endurance event series. She is a passionate advocate for women’s participation in sport.

The side’s nets are taking place on Mondays at Wallington County Grammar School until March 23 for females 12 and over.

Meanwhile Beddo are top, top, top of the league – indoors.

They finished first in the AJ Sports Surrey Slam Indoor Cricket League, pipping five other sides. Aamir Raza scored the most runs in the competition – 259. And Tom Bevan took the most wickets – 15. This Sunday they are in the quarter-final of the cup against Lahore Kings at Downsend School. Good luck Beddo!

Men’s nets start on February 25 at Trinity School, from 8.30–10. They go on for six weeks.

Natalie’s other half Ollie has also been busy.

Another striking poster with two cricketers on horseback saying ‘Let’s Go Racing’ is promoting a Race Night fundraiser in the Beddo pav on May 2.

For people who don’t know how these things work, you don’t have actual horses and jockeys in the clubhouse, but instead you place your bets on films of previous races.

Colts manager Ollie told the Beddo Blog: “I’ve taken the lead on organising the first fundraiser for Beddington CC this season, with the hope of others also stepping up later to help bring the club together.

“I hope this will be one of many fundraisers throughout the year that unite the club and raise vital funds. For this to be successful, I’m looking for the support of every team captain and club member to help get people involved. This is set to be a fun, enjoyable evening, so please reach out to reserve your table or tickets, and raise vital funds.”Meanwhile Beddo cricketers have been on their travels this winter. Women’s team chief Sarah Wozniak went to Australia to watch the Ashes with sons Joe and Ed.

“We had a great couple of weeks in Australia to take in the Ashes,” Sarah told the blog. “Unfortunately, by the time we arrived on a stopover in Doha Airport we knew the Ashes could not be won by England. However, joining a record crowd of 94,199 for Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was something that will stay with us forever. It was great to see an England victory for the first time in 16 years in Australia, even if the match bore little resemblance to Test cricket and was over in two days. The early finish gave us plenty of time to explore Melbourne anyway, and we bumped into the England team at the airport on the way to Sydney.”

Closer to home, young aces Alf Gardner (with dad Sean), Ben Turbervill (with father Huw) and Connor Wilkins went on a trip to the home of football, Portman Road. They saw 1962 league champions Ipswich Town beat Blackpool 2-1 in the FA Cup, and even had a ride on a tractor.
