Latest NewsUmpire retires 200 not out! (June 12, 2009)Infamous Chris 'Burty' Burton has unfortunately had to retire from his position as 2nd XI umpire.
It is some acheivement that Burty umpired for the 2nd X1 for 12 years (over 200 league fixtures) and went for 11 years without missing a single league game! It is only now due to a bad foot and back that it has become impossible for him to continue without risking further personal discomfort.
I'm sure Burty will be missed by both Beddington and opposition players as an umpire who was always right (in his eyes) and always happy to enter into a bit of banter. Personally, I will never forget a home 2nd XI fixture against Spencer in 2005 (ish) when a close match, heading to the final over of the game with Beddo needing a single wicket to win and Spencer still within reaching distance of their target. Burty promptly gave the batsman out from a run out shout, despite being in completely the wrong position and facing the carpark as opposed to the crease as he dodged the incoming throw! Needless to say the batsman was none to happy and promptly chased Burty into the carpark with his bat being weilded above his head!
Burty has told me he is deeply saddened by this enforced retirement as it was his biggest enjoyment - including his hockey. Most of his hockey colleagues think that hockey is his first love - they're wrong! However, I'm sure Burty will continue to provide banter for the bowlers as he becomes a spectator and occasional scorer!
On behalf of Beddington CC, and especially 2nd XI skippers Mick Lewis and more recently Richard Milligan may I thank Burty for his years of service and wish him all the best for his new role....just leave the car at home!!
