Surrey Hat-trick for Beddo Youngster (March 03, 2009)


Beddington CC under10, all rounder, William Ward, swapped bat and pads for trunks and goggles  when he  swam in the Surrey Age Group Championships, held at Guildford Spectrum throughout February.

 

He became  Surrey Champion  in three distances, winning  Gold Medals in the 200m Breast-stroke, the 100m Individual Medley and the 50m Breast-stroke.

His finest moment came when he demolished the field in the 200m Breast-stroke, winning by a staggering  16 seconds,  lowering his personal best by 21 seconds.

 

William, who swims with Sutton and Cheam Swimming Club, achieved medals and personal best times in 4 out of the 5 finals he reached.

 

The most surprising  win was the 100 Individual Medley, a flat out sprint covering all four strokes. He came from a seeding of 6th position to  grab the Gold by over one and a half seconds  against  far more experienced opposition.

 

In a Championships dominated by swimmers from Guildford and Leatherhead clubs  he won the first Gold Medals swimmers from Sutton and Cheam have won for 6 years.
