Latest News2nd and 3rd XI's Avoid Relegation (September 01, 2008)Well done to the 2nd and 3rd XI's for avoiding relegation in their respective Division 1's.
Despite losing to Farnham this week, the 2's are now safe courtesy of Worcester Park beating Cheam leaving them 14 points behind us with only 13 left to play for on the final day of the season. It has been difficult for skipper Richard Milligan and stand-in skipper Darren Cuff as they have had the knock-on problems from injuries in the 1st XI squad. This has meant youngsters such as Gary Morris, Jon Coles and Alex Basson have been relied upon and they will have gained valuable experience this year. We can now look to relax and enjoy the final game of the season against Esher and look to improving in 2009.
I'm sure in the first half of the season 3rd XI captain Chris Austin would have been contemplating throwing in the towel. Following a succession of losses to lesser teams we were rooted to the foot of the table and it was only in the 9th game of the season we picked up our first win. This was followed by 4 wins from the final 7 games (excluding 1 abandonment) and victory in this weekends final game against Warlingham saw the 3's finish in 14th, 2 clear of the relegation zone in the end. Again, Chris will be looking for the side to fulfill its potential in 2009 and be challenging at the opposite end of the table.
Finally, lets hope that the 1st XI can also avoid relegation next weekend. The loss against Farham now sees us at the foot of the table with 1 to play. However, both Purley and Farnham have stiffer opposition than us and we MUST win to have any chance of a 'great escape'!
