Cricket Week 2008 Report

(August 01, 2008)
With the Met Office predicting rain for the week starting Monday 7th July, we were all hoping that as usual, they'd got it wrong! Unfortunately this was not to be! Monday started overcast, and I'm sure I'm correct in saying, we didn't actually catch a glimpse of the sun until some time on Friday!!

Monday:
In overcast conditions with rain promised, the Cricket Week 2008 got under way with the visit of Hayes (that's in Kent for Ben Tibble). As is customary, Hayes batted first looked like posting about 500 as they reached 234 for 5 as the heavens opened. There was only enough time for about 25 overs and I'm sure many of Beddington XI were actually grateful for the weathers intervention! Matthew Sturt was the pick of the Beddo bowlers with figures of 3 for 45.08CW 13
The Hayes boys were in good form as always and were happy to join their hosts in drinking through the afternoon as the rain continued to fall outside. There was no further play and as the Karaoke got under way, many people obviously decided not to risk getting their feet wet and opted to stay at home. Those who were there had a good time though and enjoyed a damp start to the week.

Tuesday:
This was by far the best days weather of the week! However, a fairly weak Beddington XI, consisting of a number of colts in addition to Bonzo the Clown, faced a strong Stoics XI, consisting of a number of 1st XI players including the Dulwich (Premiership) overseas player!! The Dulwich player duly went on to score 140 and was rarely troubled by the youthful attack. A positive for Beddo was the bowling of Ryan May who bowled tightly and finished with 3 wickets. Will Brown also contributed with 3 catches, while Bonzo entertained everyone (apart from his brother) with some comedy fielding and bowling! The visitors finally declared on 230 for 4.
Once again the youngsters were given a chance to show what they could do but with only Basson (28) contributing it was left to senior player Dan Baker to save or win the game. Unfortunately Dan perished for 25 although Steve Cowlin took over and scored 55. Despite leaving the number 11 to survive 1 ball to save the game, it was job done and game drawn.
The Race Night was rained off (or not organised) but was replaced by indoor games including darts, cards and of course, beer pong! Once again an enjoyable day!

Wednesday:
08CW 16The game against Old Actonians was a complete wash out but still saw a good Beddo day. The Old A's still made the trip to Beddo despite the weather, and took full advantage of the chance to enjoy a fine lunch as well as the bar. They will, I'm sure have left haunted by the sight of Pav and his crew in their red (and rather large) hawiian shirts!
Although, again due to the weather, most of the teams withdrew from the 5-a-side football competition, the ultra keen colts still played on through the torrential rain.

Thursday:
With the weather vastly improved, hopes were high of some cricket after the limited efforts of the previous 3 days. A full game was enjoyed as Dick 08CW 03Sherwin brought his XI to face a stronger Beddo XI to those playing earlier in the week. As usual, the visitors batted first and were unfortunately dismissed for 130 with Gary Morris taking 3 for 27. The hosts eventually won by 8 wickets with Simon Lewis (60) and Greg Cornell (45) scoring most of the runs.
Thursday also saw the most successful evening of the week as people turned out for Danny Baker's famous Quiz Night. These evening always prove popular and several teams took part. I'm not sure who won, but my money is on the Cummins/Lester (senior) team!!

Friday:
Although President's Day has moved this year under Tony Cummins, we still welcomed the Paralytics on Friday. In a change from the norm, Beddington chose to bat first. With several 1st and 2nd XI players available we were much stronger later in the week and compiled a total of 222 all out. Matt Arnold top scored with 77, with contributions from Ian Messom (44) and Antony Down (31). Once again the rain had the final say, and with the Para's struggling at 113 for 7 the covers came on as the heaven's opened. No more play resulted in a drawn game with Matt Arnold followed up his innings with 3 wickets!
Once again we welcomed Mike Basson's band, Second Nature, to the club for the evening. A good turn out enjoyed the evening of music, and some people even made it onto the dance floor (after a few drinks of course).

Thanks must go to Bernie Hargreave and her helpers for all their hard work through the week. As we have now come to expect, the lunches and teas every day were fantastic and all the opposition commented to that effect!
Thanks also to Mick Lewis for attempting to pull things together at the last minute and also to Paul Baker and the bar staff for keeping the bar stocked and open!
