What is Chance to Shine?
Chance to shinewill serve cricket well – how could it not, given that it will bring cricket to two million young people over ten years? But it is not in itself a campaign for cricket.
The clear motivation behind Chance to shine lies in recognising the power of competitive team sports – and cricket in particular – to help young people develop skills and attitudes that will help them in all aspects of their future lives. Cricket can play a vital role in the education and well-being of young people from all communities, since cricket, played regularly in competition, gives opportunities to lead healthy, purposeful and balanced lives.
Cricket insists upon high standards of conduct and provides good role models. Cricket is wholly inclusive and draws together people from all cultures and backgrounds. It gives opportunities to boys and girls, as well as to those with disabilities. Cricket is able to reach all of our major ethnic communities in a way no other sport can.
How Does it Achieve This?
Over the course of ten years Chance to shine will reach a third of all schools in England and Wales and engage two million young people.
Chance to shine is a campaign for schools, but one which is delivered through good cricket clubs - with the support of other partners. Structured coaching programmes – 300 hours each year delivered to the cluster of six schools Summer Camps – generally based at cricket clubs during three weeks of the Summer Holiday period 200 Chance to shine projects were delivered in 2007 to 1300 State Schools serving all communities, including inner-city and rural areas, by coaches operating from 200 clubs throughout England and Wales. Chance to shine will expand year on year, ultimately through 800 – 1000 projects that will engage with at least one third of all state schools and reach two million young people over ten years.
How Are Beddington CC Involved?
In our second year as a Chance to Shine club, Beddington Cricket Club has looked to develop Cricket in local state schools.
As part of the scheme Beddington provides coaching during lesson time, competitive opportunities against other schools as well as holiday coaching courses.
The schools we visit as part of the initiative are High View, Beddington Park, Holy Trinity, Stanley Park Juniors and High School.
Chance to Shine Manager, Antony Down states “It is great to strengthen our links with the local community. Many of these children would not have the chance to play cricket otherwise so our coaches love introducing them to the game. We hope that the children will want to become members of our club".

At a recent four day coaching camp run by Beddington Cricket Club a number of local children attended and were able to avoid the showers and improve their cricket.
The camp was organised as part of the club’s work through the Chance to Shine campaign, which is regenerating competitive cricket in state schools. The children enjoyed batting, bowling and fielding sessions and tested their new-found skills in the Allianz Skills Challenge.
Chance to Shine Manager for Beddington, Antony Down said “We have coached in a number of local schools over the summer term and these camps are an ideal way to sustain interest and enjoyment of the game over the holidays”.
Beddington are committed to providing another two years of coaching in state schools as part of the scheme. Powered by Create |
